Almost half of the year 2020, we have spent in lockdown and god knows how long we have to stay indoors. It was not easy for any human to survive in lockdown, giving up their habits and adapting lockdown rules. Everyone got lifetime lessons during the lockdown period.
People had to say no to the gym, office, travel, temples, mosques and what not. Apart from this pandemic situation, there are many instances which makes you feel 2020 is the worst year.
1. The 2019-2020 Australian Bushfire
The year started with the death of over 500 million Australian animals due to bushfire. The smoke pollution that blanketed the country’s southeast during the bushfire may have killed more than 400 people, burned an estimated 18.6 million hectares and destroyed over 5,900 buildings.
2. Communal Riots in Delhi
The communal violence that left 53 dead in Delhi in February 2020. This is the worst communal violence India saw in seven decades in February, with two and a half days of rioting leaving at least 53 dead, many more injured and thousands affected.
The events were the result of fallout from the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and supporters opponents of the CAA-NRC clash took many lives.
3. Death of Kobe Bryant in Helicopter Crash
On January 26, Kobe Bryant, along with his 13-year-old daughter and seven others on board lost their lives in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles. Kobe was one of the NBA’s all-time greatest players and his sudden death news left sports fans in shock.
4. Coronavirus Pandemic
The outbreak of coronavirus is one 2020 calamity that has great damage to human survival and impacted the global economy. The outbreak was first identified in China’s Wuhan city in December 2019. On March 11, the World Health Organization recognized it as a pandemic.
Globally, as of 1:38 pm CEST, 20 June 2020, there have been 8,525,042 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 456,973 deaths, across 188 countries and territories reported to WHO.
5. Ukrainian Jetliner Crash in Iran
The beginning of the year also witnessed a dramatic escalation in hostilities between the US and Iran. A US drone strike killed Iran’s most notorious spymaster, Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps commander Qassem Soleimani. The Iran military unintentionally shot down the Ukrainian plane which killed 176 people from Iran, Ukraine, Canada, Sweden, UK and Afghanistan.
6. Natural Calamities
Earthquakes in Turkey killed at least 41 and more than 1,600 were injured after an earthquake rattled the region on January 24. A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck in the Caribbean on January 28, prompting brief tsunami warnings and office evacuations as far away as Florida.
Devastating floods in Indonesia killed 66 people and forced almost 400,000 to flee their homes.
Red-hot lava gushed out of a volcano in the Philippines on January 12. After a sudden eruption of ash and steam forced villagers to flee and also shut down Manila’s international airport, offices, and schools. More than 240 international and domestic flights were cancelled in Manila.
During the lockdown, India witnessed 2 major cyclone storms-Amphan and Nisarga. Super Cyclonic Storm Amphan caused widespread damage in Eastern India, specifically West Bengal, and also Bangladesh in May 2020.
7. Toxic Chemical Leakage in Vizag
Hundreds of people were admitted to hospital and several died after a gas leak accident in Vizag. A blanket of gas spread over a radius of about 3km sickening people in at least four villages. Video footage showed pavements and roads littered with limp bodies of humans as well as animals.
8. Pakistan Airliner Crash
On May 22, a Pakistan International Airlines flight crashed in the residential area of Karachi. At Least 97 people were killed but miraculously, two passengers survived the crash.
9. Pregnant Elephant Fed Pineapple Filled with Firecrackers
A heart-wrenching story of a pregnant elephant dying a horrific death after being fed pineapple filled with firecrackers. The 15-year-old elephant was offered pineapple by locals on the streets when the elephant left the forests in search of food.
The fruit exploded in her mouth and broke her jaw. The pregnant elephant walked up to the Velliyar River and just stood there, to soothe her injuries, the elephant stood in the river with her mouth and trunk in the water. After hours of attempts by the forest officers to rescue the elephant, she died at 4 pm on May 27, standing in water. This tragic animal tale was questioning humanity.
10. Sushant Singh Rajput’s Suicide News Made 2020 Worst Year
Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput died by suicide in Mumbai on June 14. This news left his fans, family, friends and the whole nation in a state of shock. According to report 2 minor fans from Patna and Port Blair committed suicide after the news of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.
11. Bollywood Star’s Sudden Demise
Bollywood has lost two legends, back to back-Irfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor. Irfan Khan died at age 53 in hospital of Mumbai due to colon infection. Just after a day of Irfan’s death, India was shocked to learn of the death of Rishi Kapoor. Mr Kapoor, 67, was a Bollywood giant, a handsome, charming matinee idol.
42-Years singer-composer Wajid Khan of music director duo Sajid-Wajid died on June 1 in a city hospital due to complications arising from a kidney infection.
TV stars Manmeet Grewal and Preksha Mehta committed suicide during the lockdown period due to no work phase in lockdown.
12. The killing of George Flloyd
On the 25th of May, 2020, 46 years old George Flloyd was killed due to police brutality. 4 policemen were involved in arresting him for allegedly using a $20 counterfeit note. Camera footage revealed that Flloyd doesn’t resist his arrest. Despite that, two of the policemen knelt on his back while many of the onlookers captured the scene on mobile phones.
Flloyd could be heard saying that he was unable to breathe several times before he finally lost his life.
This event ignited a series of protests across the United States of America. The protests soon turned violent and caused a lot of destruction to public properties. The black lives matter campaign was rekindled. This received immense support from across the world and particularly in social media. The police officers involved were fired and charged under the state and federal laws.
13. China India standoff
The 21st century led a violent face-off in the Galwan valley between the two oldest civilizations, India and China. The India-China border issues is an old-historical approach.
Despite the growth in economic and strategic ties of both the areas, recently an environmental imbalance took place. The latest India-China face-off resulted in the sleep of more than 20 soldiers. This conflict took place after 40 years (approx.)
The contemporary relation has caused a decline in peace. This face-off took place on the LAC of Indo-China border after five decades, sacrificing the life of Indian Army personnel including 16 commanding officers. The incident undoubtedly widened an unstable stand-off between both the countries.
14. Locust Swarm
Hundreds of billions of locusts swarmed through parts of East Africa and South Asia to India. Huge Locust Swarm is threatening the food supply of tens of millions. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization, the locusts could affect the food security of 25 million people.
15. Youtube Took Video Down of India’s Popular Youtuber
Last month a popular Indian Youtuber created a roast video on Tik-Tokers and within a few hours, it became a trending video. The video was creating history in breaking all engagements but suddenly Youtube took down the video. This news made Indian youths sad and social media became a battlefield for Youtuber-Tiktokers.
