The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League 2020 is being played in UAE from 19th September. The matches have opened its windows in three cities and three stadiums. And it started in September it has already covered half the tournament.
The greatest cricket carnival has already begun it’s Round 2 and here is the point table:
In an earlier edition, viewers’ belief that the Indian Premier League indicates entering half of the league matches while conserving an NRR on the positive wall of zero is enough for a grant to earn it through the playoffs.
But this 2020, here is something unusual for the yellow jerseys. The most successful squads of the tournament, the Chennai Super Kings for the first time in tournament history do not find themselves in the Playoffs next month.
The team Chennai, being the most popular in the tournament has anyways failed to surpass their arch-rivals. Whereas Mumbai Indians are sharp enough when it comes to knockouts.
Though, the Super Kings have a better head to head record in IPL. But in 2020, the performance of CSK led by the former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Even though turned well initially the super Kings could not win. Gradually, the team went on losing. Whereas the Chennai kings have always ended among the top four in all previous editions. They have played so far and raised the crown thrice.
Chennai Super Kings maintains a huge fan base, but this year after each match, the fans are left with disappointment.
HERE ARE A FEW REASONS FOR WHICH CSK MIGHT NOT BE QUALIFYING FOR THE PLAYOFFS OF IPL 2020:
The departure of Suresh Raina
The absence of Chinna Thalla is weakening the team badly. Coming up on No.3, Suresh Raina stands the backbone for the super kings. Given the title of Mr. IPL for his perfect attack and defence techniques. As with his versatility, he controls the play.
So, this might stand to be one of the greatest reasons for the team.
Lack of match training for leading players
The captain MS Dhoni, Shane Watson, and Ambati Rayudu are the major players for CSK for the IPL season. None of the players have played competitive cricket at the highest level in the last year or so.
All major three are veterans and have already retired from international cricket. They have also neither been featured for their domestic teams since 2019 and it’s uncertain for them to fare up in the initial stages of the tournament without ample match practices.
The late coming of overseas players
The three-time IPL heroes CSK will miss the all-around firepower of Sam Curran and Mitchell Santner in the season. The super kings have three great overseas players Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo, Imran Tahir, in their squad. In the initial matches, the team went weak as Bravo and Tahir were playing the ongoing Caribbean Premier League.
Whereas, Curran played being part of the England squad for the white ball games against Australia.
Although the players reached before the Indian Premier League started. But they could not start practices and training as they were quarantined for 7 days and returned after getting three negative COVID tests.
The late comeback of Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad
The two fine bowlers Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad got tested COVID positive at the moment. While Chahar certainty was in CSK XI, and Gaikwad was expected to play in Raina’s absence.
Yet, they got quarantined and will have to return with two negative COVID tests after 14 days to start their training. Later they turned COVID negative, but it took a couple of more weeks for them to return to full potential.
The team bowler Deepak Chahar, the star of CSK falling to take early wickets. The early wicket is a key secret for the super kings. MS Dhoni battling with only 5 bowlers. And even the spinners are failing to take wickets at regular intervals.
Jadeja is not in his form whereas Piyush Chawla is giving away a lot of runs. The death bowling is also a big concern for the team. In the match against Rajasthan, we saw the giving away of 30 runs.
The game finisher Dhoni
The world believes, “MS Dhoni is CSK, CSK is Dhoni”. The big topic for this IPL is why MS Dhoni is not covering himself at number 5. When a player of calibre and dignity like Dhoni comes to bat at number 7, it already conveys a clue to the opposition team that “We have given up”.
The performance of Dhoni has come top in the order, still, he advises to send Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Sam Curran over him. The fans need to understand him as he is no more a player who can hit every ball into the stands as soon as he comes into bat.
Players like Kedar Jadhav are good when a 30-40 quick strike is needed, but to expect a match-winning from them is uncertain.
MS Dhoni the man who can earn matches in crucial situations. Yes, he takes time and finishes. By the time he walks into bat, the required run rate reaches 18-20 runs per over. MS Dhoni arriving in the field at number 7, when the match is out of hands is indeed disheartening. But still, he stands to be the hope of every Chennai fans.
Absence of Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh, an experienced bowler missing in the IPL season. The setback of Mr. Singh from the team Chennai Super Kings for some personal issues can be another reason for disqualifying.
On September 4, the veteran Indian spin bowler tweeted on social media about his absence from Dream11 and wished his squad to have a great IPL time.
Yet, it will be unfair to inscribe the three-time Indian Premier League champions out so early in this season. Even though the Kings have lost five games in the tournament so far. They have maintained a not-so-poor NRR (net run-rate). The 10-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab has also worked in their turn.
Though NRR comes into play in case of a tie, the history implies that the fourth and fifth-placed teams are most likely to end up keeping the same points. Still, such a scenario should not prevent CSK’s chances of qualification.
Even after the continuous loss, the fans believe that “the success of Chennai Super Kings determines the success of the Indian Premier League.” This is the ambience of the yellow jerseys and the man MS Dhoni, but after all, it’s 2020. Still, MS Dhoni’s major goal should be to try and win at least 5 of their remaining 7 matches.
